How Much Does it Cost to Take an FTCE Exam?
The cost of your exam will depend on which FTCE you are taking and whether you are taking the entire exam or separate subtest(s).
The General Knowledge (GK) test is $130 for all four subtests. For this exam, you can choose to take varying amounts of subtests at one time. If you take one subtest, the cost is $32.50, for two subtests it’s $65, and for three subtests it’s $97.50.
The Professional Education (PEd) costs $150.
The Elementary Education K-6 and Prekindergarten/Primary PK-3 exams each have four subtests. On your first attempt, you must take all four subtests for $150. After your first attempt, you can retake individual subtests for the following costs:
One subtest – $37.50
Two subtests – $75
Three subtests – $112.50
All other Subject Area Exams (SAE) cost $150*.
*The English 6-12 and Middle Grades English 5-9 both have two subtests. You have to take both subtests (for $150) on your first attempt. If you fail one of the subtests, you can retake the single subtest for $75.
*The German K-12 exam has two subtests that can be taken separately or together. It costs $75 for one subtest and $150 for both subtests.

What Happens if You Fail an FTCE Test? Can You Retake it?
No one plans to fail an FTCE exam, but what if you do fail? Great news! You’re able to retake the exam.
If you fail an FTCE exam you must wait 31 calendar days to retake the exam. You cannot schedule a new exam attempt while your test results are pending, only after the official FTCE scores are released.
All failed exams must be retaken in their entirety except for the General Knowledge Test, Elementary Education K–6, German K–12, Prekindergarten/Primary PK–3, English 6-12, and Middle Grades English 5-9. On these exams, you only need to retake the subtest(s) that you did not pass.
You can retake your exam as many times as you need to pass it, but keep in mind that you’ll have to pay the exam fees for each attempt. Make sure you are prepared as possible the first time around with 240 Tutoring’s FTCE study guides.
Are There Any Other Costs Associated With Taking an FTCE Test?
In addition to exam fees, there are a few other costs you should account for when prepping for your FTCE.
Remember, if you fail an exam, you’ll need to pay the exam or subtest fee again. This can range from $32.50 for one subtest, all the way to $150 to retake an entire exam.
You should also factor in the cost of an FTCE study guide. The cost of a study guide will vary depending on the source, but you should expect to pay about $40 to $60 per month for a reliable study guide subscription. At 240 Tutoring, we offer comprehensive, test-aligned study material for many FTCE exams for a low monthly price. While it can be tempting to forego study material to save money, study guides are a worthwhile investment. Even three months of a 240 Tutoring subscription is cheaper than having to retake most FTCE tests!
Additionally, there are fees for the following:
- $75 for an FTCE score verification session — This lets you review specific written or multiple-choice responses on your exam, depending on your score. You are not able to change your answers or adjust your score.
- $20 to clear your FTCE account
- Certification application fees: $75 per subject. This will be paid after you pass your exam(s), when you apply to become a certified teacher.
