The Michigan Test for Teacher Certification (MTTC) is an exam series required for professional teacher licensing in the state of Michigan. The MTTC is governed by the Michigan Department of Education and administered by Pearson VUE test centers. The exam series as a whole consists of different subject-area tests. Each test is designed to identify candidates with a satisfactory level of prerequisite knowledge to succeed as a teacher in Michigan schools.
All new teacher candidates in Michigan are required to pass the MTTC. MTTC exams are the only tests that meet the requirements for teacher certification in Michigan. In addition, teachers who are currently certified in Michigan also have to take MTTC tests to add new subjects to their license. For example, an elementary-level teacher who wants to switch to secondary-level teaching will need to pass the required secondary-level MTTC exams.
It can be difficult to know which MTTC test to register for, but we have the resources to help.
In-state teacher candidates should contact their Michigan Preparation Provider to determine which test to take. A list of approved Educator Preparation Programs can be found online at the Michigan Department of Education website.
Out-of-state teacher candidates should apply for Michigan certification on the Michigan Online Educator Certification System (MOECS). After the certification application has been processed and accepted, then MDE will send out an evaluation report that includes MTTC testing requirements.
Once you are sure of the MTTC exam you are required to pass, you can register and start to prepare for the MTTC exam. Good luck!
