How Much Does It Cost To Take a TExES Exam?
Let’s start with the cost of the TExES exam. Each TExES exam costs $116. Depending on your certification, you may need to take more than one exam, so it’s important to know that every exam costs $116. Some certification areas require that you take both the $116 exam and a CORE Subject exam for $58. If you take a TExES exam with subtests (like the CORE Subjects exams) and fail one subtest, you can retake the failed section for $58.
What Happens If You Fail a TExES Test?
Let’s talk about failing a TExES exam. If you fail a test, you can retake it after 30 days. You can’t register until the scores are posted, so there’s no need to panic until you see your official score. Scores are typically posted within seven (7) days of taking the exam, but exams with constructed-response questions may take up to 28 days to post the scores.

You also get four more attempts to pass a TExES exam before you are required to apply for a test retake waiver (see below). If you need to request a waiver, there is a $164 application fee associated with this request.
How Many Attempts Do You Get To Pass a TExES Test?
You can retake any TExES exam up to four more times, meaning that you can take a TExES exam for a total of five times (one first attempt plus four retakes if needed). That seems like a waste of time and money, so you should definitely invest in a 240 Tutoring TExES study guide before you take the test: TExES Study Guides. If you need to retake the exam after your fifth attempt, you will need to apply for the TExES 4x waiver. For more information on that process, check out TExES 4x Waiver Request.
Are There Any Other Costs Associated With Taking a TExES Test?
There are no other costs associated with taking a TExES exam, but there are other costs for certification. You will need to complete the following as part of the process to become certified as a teacher in Texas:
- State application for the standard certificate (submitted after certification exam(s) are completed)
- Fingerprinting for the purpose of background checks
Fortunately, even after all of these fees, you will be thrilled when you pass the exam and finish the certification process!
