Everything you need to know about TExES Certification Exams
The Texas Examination of Educator Standards (TExES) is the exam series for teachers in the state of Texas. It is not one exam, but refers to all content tests offered in the state of Texas. TExES is an umbrella term for all the content tests in Texas, however you may only have to take one or a few of these tests. The test you take depends on the subject area you want to teach. All tests contain multiple choice questions, but some also have written and oral response questions as well. To learn more about your specific exam visit the TExES website.
The TExES exam you take depends on the subject matter you will be teaching. There are content exams for prekindergarten, elementary education, middle school, high school, special education, as well as other specialized areas. To make finding out which exams are included in the TExES testing series, we create a list of all the TExES exam! Check out this article to learn more about which exam is best for you!
You can register for the TExES exams online 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The TExES website recommends learning all the information about your exam and taking a look at the exam’s preparation materials before registering for your exam. Learn more about TExES exam registration using this article. When ready you can register online here.
You usually take your TExES content exams after you have graduated and earned your degree. However, you can take these exams while you are enrolled in a certification program, before you apply to an alternative certification program(as a college graduate who already has a degree), or anytime after you are already a certified teacher. Note: if you are a member of a program you must get permission from the program before registering for a TExES exam.
Tests are by appointment only, year round. Test appointments are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Check appointment availability here.
If you fail a TExES exam you have the option to retake that exam. You have 5 attempts at the exam in order to pass. You are required to wait 30 days between test attempts. If you are not able to pass the exam after 5 attempts, you must apply and receive a TEA test-limit waiver before being allowed to retake the exam again.
